Novice Competition: This competition is open to any dog who thinks it can pull more than the other dog! After registering (below), bring your dog over to the Pioneer Mine Dry Building in Ely at 7:00am on Saturday, February 28th to be weighed. The Novice Competition will be limited to 32 entries and divided into two (2) weight classes as follows:

Novice Competition Weight Classes:

16) Dogs weighing under 65 lbs.

16) Dogs weighing above 66 lbs.

Once the Pro Competition has completed (approximately 1:00pm), the Novice Competition will begin. Members of the Northcentral Working Dog Club will be on hand to help introduce you and your dog to the exciting sport of Pulling. Equipment for your dog (harnesses) will be provided. Novice dogs will generally follow NADSR rules, however, Chief Judge, Adam Lattimer will usually "look the other way" in an effort to insure that you and your dog obtain the necessary confidence to be successful.

The starting weight for your dog will be 300 lbs. Most dogs have no problem with this weight, as the cart rolls pretty easy on the flat surface. Weight pulling is a round for round sport. All dogs will pull the weight round and then wait to pull the next weight round (so they will get to rest between rounds). You always want to leave a pull on a high note.  If your dog gets stuck or can't pull the weight in the time allowed, the cart will be pushed through BUT that weight round will not count. THE DOG ALWAYS WINS! In the interest of dog safety, the maximum weight any dog will be allowed to pull during the Novice Competition is 1000 lbs. If you believe that your dog is FULLY capable of pulling more than 1000lbs., you should consider entering the Pro Competition. Prizes will be awarded to all Novice Competitors. Bring your dog out on Saturday, February 28th, build your dogs' confidence and have some fun!
